Project Description
The historic Cherry neighborhood in Charlotte is feeling the pressure of growth.  The neighborhood is minutes from the banks and office towers of uptown Charlotte, backs up to the upscale Meyers Park neighborhood and has luxury condos going up on the neighborhood’s edges. TAHG and the project’s co-developer Living Gardens LLC developed Cherry Gardens to ensure seniors continued to have an affordable option in the neighborhood.  In addition to being affordable, Cherry Gardens incorporates numerous green features that make the homes healthier, resource and energy efficient, and better for the environment.

Green Features:
 * Utility savings from high efficiency construction including Energy Star light fixtures, Energy Star Appliances, high performance windows, and water efficient low flow toilets and showerheads

 * Healthier living environment for residents through greater fresh air circulation and reduced exposure to toxins through the use of Low or No VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints, primers, and carpets.

 * Smart growth location along a transit line and close proximity to a grocery store, banks, a greenway and numerous businesses promotes walking and decreased dependency on cars

 * Recycling of construction waste significantly reduced the amount of waste sent to the landfill; use of recycled content and locally sourced materials decreased the environmental impact of the project

 * Use of North Carolina native drought tolerant plants decreases demand for landscaping watering

US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is a nationally recognized benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED is a third-party certification system that assesses and validates the greenness of homes. Cherry Gardens is the first LEED for Homes Gold certified multifamily building in North Carolina.
